Oh how time does seem to zip right past us. It has been about a year and a half since we last saw this beautiful family. Little Colin was only crawling at that time. Fast forward — and boy has he grown! He was just as sweet as the day we first met him, a little shy but he quickly emerged from his shell. And not only has he turned into a handsome young man, but there is a little “Miss C” on the way to join this lovely family.

Although the season of fall was upon us, the temperature was still quite warm and the trees still exuded their lush green boughs. We first gathered underneath the enormous Banyan tree that shaded a small meadow which harbored many a picnic at the park. Colin was a bit timid and was not entirely sure who we were or what Mom and Dad had signed him up for. A few swings in the air and a shoulder ride from Pops lightened the mood and put him in a decidedly cheerful frame of mind. He started talking and walking around, politely asking if he could play on the swing set…such a gentleman.

Big Brother! YES!

The family brought these oh-so-tiny embellishments that they planned to adorn little Chloe with. Her tiny shoes with the protective father and big brother in the background simply melts my heart.

My dearest little sister, whom I adore…
God blessed me with you, forevermore.

Side by side, we will always be…
Through tears and heartache, I will never leave.

Through life’s trials we will work them out together…
What I am trying to say is I will love you forever.

We simply love our dads! Dads are the ones we wrestle with, tumble with, play with, run around and fall with. They inspire us to grow big and strong and in rare quiet moments, they teach us about right and wrong.

Miss Katie, you are glowing; such a gorgeous mommy-to-be. The colors and the wind played their parts beautifully that day.

Thank you so much for allowing us to capture this special time in your lives. We love watching you go from a family of 3 to a family of 4. These sweet memories will stay close to our hearts, but we absolutely cannot wait to meet Miss Chloe. Countdown til summer 2014…!

Unadorned.

Clients are never usually hesitant to ask for our opinion on their thoughts or ideas. Commonly, they reference previous sessions as their springboard; either locations peak their interest, clothing concepts set their itchy feet in motion or sweet poses inspire their curiosity. Sam was refreshing, equipped with an array of unique ideas and an outside-the-lines mentality. Yet she came to me with a timid request for images that featured more … “intimacy”.

So I scoured the internet’s woven webs of information, hoping to pinpoint ways in which I could make her shoot different from our previous maternity sessions. Mostly, I was learning of the significance of such portraiture which differed from the more engagement-styled images that most maternity photos seem to adopt. I pondered, hoping to alleviate her bashfulness on how to approach the subject we had never shot and in hindsight, help her express what she ideally wanted. I soon understood that most intimate, pregnancy snapshots were essentially boudoir photographs at first appearance.

Consequently, we decisively aspired to use Miguel and Samantha’s home as the backdrop to their delicate scene. Filling the air with sweet Pandora tunes we readied our ideal locations searching for their dwelling’s soft and beautifully inviting pockets. Sam and I had mutually agreed upon the absence of vibrant and accessorized threads, a basis for what seems to be ideal in all of Solislux’s images, instead opting for unadorned skin.

Maternity photos taken on a more intimate level bring to light the serenity and devotion shared between Sam and her husband, the soon-to-be parents to a [I am sure] beautiful baby boy. I used a hybrid form of traditional and informal techniques to first capture those images that were important to them and then utilized that unconventional, photojournalistic style Solislux is known for.

No doubt, it was in these tender moments when I witnessed the connection felt between this charming couple only to realize then why they chose this alternative approach at documenting their pregnancy. Here the emphasis was placed on touch and connection with a simple environment. This powerful little miracle illuminated the delicate, peaceful ambiance with nothing more than the love shared among Samantha and her doting husband.

There were no outside elements to steal your focus but only an organic scene much like that in which perfect little Mac will be brought into. The imagery created was comfortable and raw, documenting not only the months before Mac’s arrival but this wonderful family’s home, a crucial element in their future growth as a family.

I truly cherish the distinctive spirit of these photographs and am inspired to continue collaboration as is routine for Ashley and me, with our prospective clients. I greatly appreciate Miguel and Samantha’s warm and welcoming dispositions. Thank you, Sam for encouraging me to shift my perspective and beckoning me with your ideas into uncharted territory. Congratulations on the pending arrival of your precious little one!

California Dreamin’.

Sunlight generously marinated the sandy seaside as Chris came down to his knees; tenderly bringing his ear to Erica’s budding belly he intently listened for his son’s comforting patters. Behind this thin wall was Daddy’s boy, a soon-to-be darling companion who would be taught the ways of the waves and the feel of the gritty sand between his toes. He will come to discover the significance that his mommy and daddy hold for brightly beaming coastlines and sooner-than-later will fit into his “first San Diego t-shirt”.

Chris and Erica were born and raised in sunny California and remarkably brought home from the hospital to the same complex. Growing up they attended the same schools and shared a love for the surf, adoration and respect for the crashing swells of the Pacific Ocean. But even I, who was raised in radiant South Florida, can relate with their delight in having pink sun-kissed shoulders and that natural tendency to sway with upbeat reggae fusions.

This beautiful family stretched their sea legs and had no qualms about being caked in sand or doused in salty seawater. That carefree Cali nature graced their faces with nothing but smiles to be spending a [steamy] morning partaking in one of their favorite pastimes. They flirted and played in the waves, freely splashing at one another as little Gavin was ever present, nestled between them ready to make his debut.

Stunning Erica has this laid-back, charming demeanor that reels you in. It was evident as we instructed her along the nearly deserted beach and observed her newly brewing maternal instinct. She was already in love with her son, you just needed to watch the manner in which her hands stayed glued to her belly, always soothing and encouraging.

Without much coaxing Erica further connected with her humbling surroundings as she swiftly closed her eyes and relaxed on Chris’s surfboard, allowing the sound of the deep-sea to guide her home. In profound thought I had imagined her visualizing the way dynamic California beaches felt on her skin, in her hair and under her toes. She held us engrossed with her serenity and a glance over our shoulders revealed that Chris too was entranced.

Young, in love and awaiting the arrival of their first baby Chris and Erica wholeheartedly beckoned us into their world. Their love is truly a wonderful product of fate, having evolved over the years in the same social circles. Now baking a new life on the eastern coast apart from a majority of friends and family, these two inspired us with their courageous and spirited character.

May your love for life be one of the few great things your little man inherits from you both!
Many congratulations to you and your families, Chris and Erica! We will be eagerly awaiting Gavin’s arrival and the chance to properly introduce ourselves to him. :-)

As a counselor for a wilderness youth therapy program, our soon-to-be mom, Yurani, had no qualms for visiting the Great Outdoors. As she stepped out of the car on this crisp, spring morning, she embraced the adventure that was about to be had. With husband, Trey in tow, we “hiked” to the first location of the morning. To describe the natural beauty that is Yurani, would probably embarrass her humble nature, so I will let the pictures do the describing. Every ray of light that hit her face, seemed to enchant her even more than the ones before, and with a pregnancy glow already in place it was easy to capture her maternal beauty.

Trey and Yurani live in the great state of Georgia, and although we were not in this state is was important that we capture Yurani in a surrounding area that not only looked like home, but captured the spirit of it as well. Although we never discussed the spiritual views of this young couple, being an outdoors woman myself, it is hard not to put symbolism with the elements that we encounter. Having an expectant mother sitting on the fresh, cool earth, surrounded by the ever flowing, ever changing water captures your sense of the great circle that each new life will experience.

Although Yurani seems as though she could do no wrong in any picture, there was a secret behind our lens. Granted he wasn’t in the pictures, the presence of her sweet, adoring, husband Trey is in the sparkle in his wife’s eyes. As she was sitting, or standing, or lounging about he was right behind us telling tales of their lives: how they met, their wedding, and hilarious tales of friends. He was who she always focused on, listened to, and giggled at. He was the love in her eyes.

As the morning sun slowly crept higher and higher, we knew it was time to move on. Before we met with Yurani and Trey we had a reconnaissance mission at our location, and I have never been so excited over a field. As a frequent visitor to Georgia myself, the woods we stay in often have these exact golden, waist high grasses dancing among the pines. I knew the moment we saw it that this would be an ideal spot for our expectant mother.

Yurani’s baby bump houses a baby boy, a miniature of her husband, not only in gender but in name as well. For three generations, a family name has been bestowed on the first son. As SolisLux loves to incorporate the story of our clients lives, we were thrilled at the chance to use the number four in these images. What we were even more excited about were the ideas coming from our amazing mom-to-be! She suggested we use body paint to mark her belly as the fourth boy to receive the name of his forefathers.

Although we have heard the saying many times, its meaning always rings true: “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Since Yurani is often camping in the deepest of woods, she must carry all her essentials in one bag when she travels to and fro. Stuffed with socks, clothes, linens, and a water bottle her bag houses all “must-haves” while she is gone.

Added to her bag on this current adventure was a soft, baby blue elephant, a teal knit hat with the initials GBN4 stitched into it, wool hand woven socks, and the never failing bow and drill fire starter. The baby blue elephant is a gift from the baby’s big sister, from when she was a child. The little socks and hat were hand-made by her best friend. Deep in the background are the colors yellow, red, and blue, and although they are primary colors, they are also the colors of the Colombian flag, a culture that will be lovingly passed on by Yurani and her family. So many words, two simple pictures.

The morning was cool, but the afternoon was certainly not. By the time high noon had struck, everyone, especially our pregnant model was ready for something to dowse our internal furnace. After a final wardrobe change it was off to the springs. Awwww….the springs. Seventy-two degrees year round never sounded better. Of course, it does take a moment to get acclimated with the crisp waters, so an easing in approach was used.

It took some wading for Yurani to discover the best spot for her water pictures, but once she did the rest is history. The blue dress reflected perfectly in the crystal clear water and her baby bump sat right on top of the surface. As though she were channeling an Indian spirit she danced in the water for our thirsty lens.

Thank you Yurani and Trey for spending this wonderful morning with us! Congratulations on baby Benson! We hope to see you three again soon!
