There is a special window of fourteen days which allows for delectable newborn photography, anything just outside of that framework is like a free pass for baby to be squirmy, squeaky and mobile. Anticipating the arrival of this little one allowed us to gather our magical bag of props and doohickeys for a fresh right-out-of-the-box pink bundle, Anna Kate.

The initial adjustments that come packaged with each newborn of your very own are so full of surprises; consequently, new parents find that they require fine-tuning of their daily routines. Anna Kate had been captured in all of her teeny glory on day thirteen, just shy of our ideal window; so this little babe was anything but sleepy.

As a matter of fact, she was so in tune with our arrival that she hardly found herself able to have some shut eye. Not even the portable heater enticed her droopy lids; thus is the story of our tiny diva who knew exactly what she wanted and would not perform to our demands. :-D Try as hard as we could the cameras were much too exciting, even belly shots had her legs reeling so fast we thought she’d have taken off crawling if we adjusted the pillows just so.

Alas, as if she were well aware of the holiday poem, “Twas the Night before Christmas” Anna Kate nestled snug in her makeshift bed before her first evergreen red and white tree. With nothing more but a soft touch of light from the wide living room window we were able to capture her only peaceful slumber [i.e. nap]. These marked some of the sweetest photos of the day, as she lay gently resting atop her arms with pouty lips and delicate girly bows.

While newborns are amazingly precious bundles, photographing them requires much work. So many elements need to be taken into consideration to allow for these little ones to feel comfortable and undisturbed. We thoroughly enjoyed the pleasure of photographing beautiful Anna Kate, whose dark sapphire irises, wispy flaxen hair and long athletic legs had us swooning, wriggles and all.

Congratulations on your new, bouncing baby girl!

I often go to the forest, the woods, not only as a means of escape but to reconnect with the spiritual side of myself. To explore new grounds, breathe fresh air, and taste the freedom of a simple walk. Most people know that including some aspect of nature in their daily lives is pertinent, yet so few of us interact with the outdoors in the manor in which we should…myself included. So on a recent adventure to the great state of Georgia, I was surprised to find myself attracted to the man-made silos that stood on the grounds of our secret hide-a-way. Maybe it was the sun rays that struck against the rusting elements of the tall pillars, that caught my attention, or maybe it was the fact that although we still maintain the elements around these huge structures, we have abandoned them, let them fade into the background. And through these thoughts, another idea occurred to me, what about this scene that I am witnessing is so beautiful, and what is really the monster here?

Nature tends to mock everything mankind has ever achieved, not in an obvious way, but in a slow and tedious effort. Her tears wash over the skin of our creations, only to cause a chemical reaction that induces the breakdown of the anatomical structure…not at first, but over time. And time himself can be so cruel, to make it seem like we are but a second on his eternal watch, he mocks us more loudly than his counterpart. But still, Mother sends her organic, microbial creatures, after her tears, seen only by the eyes that look very closely. A tiny green tint is spotted upon the spokes of the wheels, a small army invading a space perceived as abandoned. Which is more beautiful? Who is the monster, nature for destroying the accomplishments of mankind or is it the accomplishments themselves that are so cruel, no longer are their purposes needed and yet they do not go away, they just stand in their place waiting.

The combination of industrial objects and nature are so breathtaking and awe inspiring we can only imagine the distorted relationship that they hold. Do we mock the sky by trying to reach its heights, or are we simply honoring is grandeur and splendor by emulating what we see? Is it beauty that I have been captivated by or is it the beast that lies below the appearances?

As I stumbled around the silos, I came across this particular piece of machinery. It stood for such a long time, loyal in it’s duty, but as you can see, it is losing the battle quicker than it’s brothers. It’s not even a captive, no chance of winning, it must just stand firm and endure the breakdown of its elements by forces much stronger than itself.

It seems so twisted and wrong, and yet I’ve never noticed til now.
And all I can do is admire the beauty of this beast.

It is truly a blessing to have met baby Harper and her family. The struggles and heartache this family went through just so they could hold this little one in their arms on the day of her photo shoot were long and tough. Harper was born at only 6 months old, and spent the first few months of her life behind the beep-beeps in a hospital’s NICU. We arrived early morning Saturday to capture 4 month old Harper, who weighed in at only 8 lbs, so little and petite yet so strong. It was with great endearment and pleasure that we captured this trio in their first official family portraits, a moment I am sure they have waited and worked incredibly hard for.

Just hear those jingle bells! Holiday pictures are a must at the moment. Christmas is just around the corner and it is one more thing you can check off the list. Harper was the perfect sleigh rider. She put her arms in the air, her feet on the dash, and away she went to white dreamland.

So sweet. The essence of yuletide.

Now for some background information. Lux and I have been biting at the bit to use a vintage baby carriage we came across. The carriage is rather small but the colors and textures in it’s details inspired us greatly. The problem was, we had yet a baby that was small enough to fit in the tiny bed. During Harper’s consultation, we asked Mom and Dad how they felt about using this classic piece in Harper’s pictures. They jumped with excitement and anticipation, even noting that they had the perfect outfit for such item. With the security of Dad’s own vintage childhood teddy bear, Harper slept as peacefully as they come.

And I believe these pictures prove just how beautifully the idea came together.

Into the nursery we ventured. With such fun and vibrant colors it was the sweetest place for a baby girl to reside. We loved how Mom and Dad kept giving us such wonderful ideas of keepsakes to include in the pictures. The basket in the nursery was lined with a rose blanket that had once belonged to Harper’s mother, which she had acquired from a dear Aunt. Such meaning in one little memento brings such history and captivation with an image. Not only are they aesthetically pleasing, but emotionally as well.

A new baby is like the beginning of all things- wonder, hope, a dream of possibilities.
Eda J. Le Shan

We enjoyed all things Harper and family and cannot thank you enough for allowing us to capture these precious moments for you. We know that Harper will continue to grow and cannot wait to see her again.

The Ties that Bind.

Sometimes when the weather is splendid, in the lower 50’s during the day accompanied by a graceful unwieldy wind, some of the tiniest Floridians just don’t appreciate it. This very gusty afternoon caught us all by surprise as our family shoot had been scheduled for an outdoor extravaganza. We’re talking cozy fall sweaters, muted colors and much greenery; a visually exciting setting for this perfectly dynamic bunch of seven. Much to the distaste of our youngest clients we were taught a very important lesson about contingency plans and working “on the fly”.

To expect the unexpected shows a thoroughly modern intellect. —Oscar Wilde

Consequently, we ditched the outdoor foliage for warm and cozy; where delightfully red noses and cheeks had a chance to get toasty in their own comfort zone.

Perhaps the most amazing part of our job is how fortunate we are in having the opportunity to enter the lives of so many charming families. The Perrines, guided by a compassionate and loving matriarch who raised two gentlemen all at once [i.e. twins], were in need of some traditional holiday portraits for the year. Come in Solis and I, who were ecstatic to have double doses of Baby “J” and get a chance to meet the rest of his clan, including his equally-as-adorable big cousin Will who also stole our hearts, grunts and all.

And we became one with the rhythm of the Perrines as they gathered in the family room: carefree, animated and humorous. There are times we forget we are on the job, because our work is just THAT incredible! There we were taking a backseat, witnessing a keepsake moment from behind our viewfinders and the Perrines savoring one another’s company allowed us to just take them in.

We learned that the “heart of life” encompasses fleeting moments like these. Where family gathers close to celebrate the arrival of new members here and now, these tiny babes who make a grand entrance, take center stage and steal the show. ;-)

In between pacifiers, gummy smiles, spit up rags and wide-eyed wonder we delightfully welcomed our first corporate client, Maestros Hair Studio [link here]. Quite a different change of pace, Solis and I dove right into the industrious world of a specialty hair salon thereby getting to waddle our feet in a new photographic arena.

Even though Maestros was consumed by ever demanding surroundings the attention to detail we needed was much like that of photographing an infant as there was a quiet precision to each of the girls. This session, however, wasn’t about waiting for the moment when a monumental giggle emerged but anticipating the craft that would renovate and revamp an image.

Maestro[noun]: Master of an art, teacher.

From chemical straightening to special occasion updos, Maestros packs a team of master stylists who are both welcoming and sociable. We were affectionately taken in and at once were swept up by the characteristic aura emanating from their delicate fingertips to the enthusiastic and professional way each lady responded to client demands.

Each piece of equipment upon the many stations served a valuable purpose, whether they were for clipping, curling, straightening or dyeing. Most exciting to Solis and I was that we were not simply capturing the professionals but the tools of these artists as well, the products that help to make this salon a successful and proficient machine.

The experience you deliver to your customers should be one that prospers a long and meaningful connection; a wonderful lesson we took away from working with Maestros and its personnel. As photographers we are responsible for portraying the visual aspects of our lives and stylists are there to mold them. We are both working one in the same; creating art through the use of varying instruments to build an emotional connection for our clients.

Thank you, Maestros for allowing us to dip into your busy studio to capture a slice of your flourishing atmosphere and pleasurable business culture. We aspire to use your conscientious example to help cultivate our own prospects and also make a lasting effect on the community.

Baby J’s Dramatic Debut.

November 1st, 2010

“In the eyes of a child…there is joy, there is laughter… there is hope, there is trust, a chance to shape the future…” [Air Supply]

If there was ever a quote to fit Baby J that would have to be the one. I believe Lux and myself experienced every emotion that little “J” was expressing that day. He was ever the sweetest little baby boy you could meet with bright blue eyes and plump baby lips; giggling and smiling at himself as he changed from his pajamas to his first outfit for the day: The Holiday Reds.

But, oh how his mood changed as he was stuck in a sleigh and asked to smile for two strange women. So precious and funny, he performed with the most unforgettable pouts and we delightfully forgave. The soothing sound of his mother’s voice accompanied by her gentle touch quickly calmed him and we were able to capture these festive holiday snapshots.

We heard Daddy adored these little shoes and how could he not? We were quickly enamored with how adorable these kicks were for “J” and how happily he showed them off. Quite the expressive baby, he loved to wiggle his fingers and twice he managed to slip off his Baby Gap footwear as he excitedly pumped his legs.

Who ever said that Santa was just an old man with 8 reindeer didn’t know little Baby J and his fantastic sleigh!
Have yourself a Merry little Christmas with this bundle of love and goodness.

We were multi-tasking on this photo shoot, with holiday and baby pictures to squeeze in. After the fun, festive time was over Mom decided there was nothing cuter than some [diapered] naked baby shots. Boy did his blue eyes stand out on fresh baby skin amidst the sunlight seeping in from the blinds. As you can imagine, we were entranced by those blue eyes one too many times that morning.

And of course the keepsakes; Bunny is his absolute favorite sleeping companion. We were told that poor Bunny took one for the team a couple of nights as he was sopping wet from the comfort sucks of little Mr. J. We know and appreciate how important these details are in baby’s life. How these small wonders will slowly drift away, so we seized the moment to capture Bunny with his master before he had outgrown his favorite pal.

Those swirly tufts of silky-soft baby hair upon his head had a hidden whisper of auburn thrown without. Dark in some lighting, light in others this little doll has beautiful locks that will slowly change as he grows older.

Mother and child; what more can be said? It is such an ancient and honored relationship, revered in many cultures and religions around the world. This moment captures the essence of what motherly love truly represents from the soft touch of her hand to the loving caress of her cheek.

These were some of the last moments of the day. From the blue stripes on his shirt to his blue blanket, we were determined to capture the blue reflection in his inquisitive sapphire eyes.

It was an adventurous day with Little J, lots of emotions were captured and many more were felt. This little guy surely touched our hearts!

It was a pleasure meeting you and your family, and we look forward to the opportunity again in the near future.
Thank you!

Happy Birthday, Ashley!

There is much to be said about friendships and business; there is much to be said about a lifelong partnership with someone who is driven by the same principles, ideals and expectations as you too. I consider myself very lucky to have Ashley in my life as she is family without the bloodline that shares in a strong connection and understands that there are clear and present lines between the two. Where I venture to balance between the lines of friendship and business is that in either case I am here to help her succeed in life.

Just as equally as she bestows laughter onto me she is always there to also offer a loving snap of wisdom and logic. Having companionship blossom between us in a business strategy course has given us that foundation of trust and camaraderie not easily found amongst the oldest of your friends. It’s a special bond we share.

There is much to be said about Ashley, but few words have just the same effect.
Thank you for being such a beautiful person in my life.

With all my love, wet puppy kisses and fluffy kitty hugs. ;-)
Happy birthday!!
