We anticipated showers, grey ominous cloudy skies and the high possibility of yet another session rescheduled. When living in Florida and arranging shoots in the spring or summer months the inevitable daily rains with their billowing trees cause even all of your backup plans from proceeding as normal. Preparations for these unexpected interruptions are not easy, however our sunshine state is also notorious for grand and beautiful clearings minutes after storms relocate and for that we are grateful.

The McAuley’s have been the epitome of flexible this year with rainstorms greeting their session dates time and again. While alternative indoor ‘game plans’ were always considered, often times our summer showers generously blanket vast areas in such abysmal darkness that natural ambient light is deficient inside.

All things considered, plus a day of anxious weather report scrutiny, we disregarded the ‘wet’ hearsays and anticipated passing sprinkles with enough time to capture everything this beautiful family desired. For when the clouds brew, equip yourself with shielding umbrellas, travel lightly and pack a mighty positive attitude. And while the grasses were damp, the air moist and the layer of humidity stifling we were greeted with the sunniest of faces!

We have been photographing this lovely family since Colin was a wee babe (here and here), but our charismatic little buddy, now ever more vocal, brought along his baby sister and what an exciting introduction that was for us! During the entirety of our session, little miss C’s sparkling blue eyes intensely focused on examining her surroundings and our strange new faces. There was something so precious about her matter-of-fact personality and boy did she force us to work hard for her smiles!

Our short time spent capturing this wonderful family is always so enjoyable, as their laid-back personalities really allow us to celebrate their bond and sweet moments as a newly composed team of four. Documenting their comfort together really inspires you and then as if with the turn of a switch their perfect, camera-ready smiles just grab you!

Understand that every family’s “perfect photo” is unlike the family before and always uniquely crafted. Rain or shine, our approach may always be similar nevertheless it is the charisma and beaming personalities of our incredible clients that direct how a session will conclude.

This coordinated foursome, proven time and again, has mastered just how to keep on the sunny side of things with their ever brilliant adoration, composure and talent to work our cameras! Clouds may bend, darken and break but you’ll have to walk on by storms because luckily we know the grass is always greener

A huge thank you goes out to the fabulous and beautiful McAuley family for yet again allowing us the luxury to capture your growing family!

As lifestyle photographers we are invariably introduced to many religious ceremonies amongst the beautiful individuals we so dearly call our clients. We were privileged to be asked to document the baptism of little Miss Angelina in the faith of the Greek Orthodox Church. As neither Jacqueline, nor myself had bore witness to such a ceremony we learned many new traditions and practices during this incredible day.

It has been said that it takes a village to raise a child; many of Angelina’s closest friends and family members were in attendance to uphold the duties in the raising of this sweet girl.

We begin by introducing you to the gorgeous façade of this beautiful church. The details in every aspect of the building were pristine, bold, and colorful. The transition from outside to in brought about the feeling of a truly Holy place.

Meet Miss Angelina.

It is all in the details. The ceiling, the baptismal candles, the book of scriptures, and the baptismal font. The baptismal candles are provided by the godparent, one large decorated candle for the ceremony and smaller white candles to be carried by the children who circle the font. The traditional decoration of a baptismal candle includes a large bow of ribbon or tulle with streamers. Each detail of this day is not without merit, as you will soon witness.

While family and friends arrive, little Lina waits patiently in her father’s arms.

And so the ceremony begins. Angelina is presented to the church in it’s entryway. Family and Godparents are surrounding her as this presentation is made. She is dressed in her pre-ceremony outfit, of which, can be any color. She will later change into her baptismal clothes which must be white and completed with socks and shoes.

A somber walk leads the parents and Godparents to the front of the church where font immersion is to take place. The priest pours oil into the cupped hands of the Godparents, who then wipe oil on the child’s body. The oiled baby is then immersed three times in the baptismal font representing Christ’s baptism, death and Resurrection.

Olive oil is poured into the oil bottle and then blessed by the priest. Any 100% pure virgin olive oil can be used for the baptism. The Holy Oil is then used by the priest to baptize the child. The priest will pour the Holy Oil into the baptismal water.

After immersion, Angelina is placed into her Godparent’s arms who hold the oil sheet to protect their clothing and absorb the Holy oil on the baby. Immediately following the baptism in the font, the priest administers a second sacrament: Chrismation, where the child receives the gift of the Holy Spirit with miron, a special oil blessed by the Ecumenical Patriarch.

A quick change into her baptismal clothes, and the lighting of the baptismal candles is next in the ritual. The dressed Lina is brought back into the church and the priest, Godparents, and baptized baby walk around the baptismal font three times.

The reading of scriptures takes place and the priest administers a third sacrament, communion, to the child.

The baptism of Angelina is complete. She is lovingly embraced by her parents and Godparent. Now the Godparent is an especially important choice. The Godparent – also known as a koumbaro (male) or koumbara (female) is responsible for the spiritual upbringing of the baptized individual. The person becomes a member of the baptized person’s family and the baptism brings about a lifelong relationship. Sweet Lina’s uncle is the blessed individual at this occasion.

A reception was held after the ceremony in honor of this oh-so-happy day! Guests were treated with boubounieres or candy favors. These are traditionally almond candy favors given to each guest after the baptism by either the godparent or the parents of the baptized child. Styles can range widely for these favors but are usually simple white, pink or blue puffs of tulle tied with a ribbon and filled with white Jordan almonds. The details and traditions of the day are simply beautiful!

Martyrika, also known as martirika, or “witness pins” – are small lapel crosses handed out at the end of the ceremony and worn by guests as proof of witnessing the baptism. The traditional pin is made of white, pink or blue ribbon and features a tiny cross or icon in the center. Angelina’s martirika were inscribed with the date of her baptism as well as the name of her Godfather.

Family and friends gather in this warm and welcoming home, complete with amazing food and sweets. Each guest takes a turn snuggling and loving on their precious Angelina.

A huge thank you goes out to the parents of Miss Angelina, Gavin and Maria, for entrusting us to capture this most sacred event. Your little Lina is so beautiful and blessed. Happy Baptism Day!

Welcome back our faithful followers! It has been such a long time since we last typed away on our blog. We have determined to make 2014 the year for us to reconnect with you via this medium. Unfortunately, we do have A LOT of story telling to do, so in no particular order (unless you ask for your story to be told next) we will try to catch up on a year’s worth of writing. Now for Summers’ Winter…

Northern Florida has long been considered part of it’s neighboring states, due to the different change in climate from its Southern brethren and that most folks around here have more of an accent. The oak laiden roadways and the visual change of seasons, is one of the countless reasons I love this area. Jackson and Nikki have a charming, newly bought house, which they have quickly turned into their loving home. Its nestled on a quiet street and surrounded by a shady grove of trees. It is to no wonder why they chose to have their Christmas photos taken in this charming place.

Christmas is Jackson’s favorite holiday. FAVORITE. Their home was transformed into a spectacle of colored lights, wreaths, and garland. Stockings were hung, poinsettias were placed, and the tree stood bold and proud. As an added touch, these two lovebirds drank hot cocoa in their mason jar glasses topped with a heavy dose of whipped cream. They playful enjoyed their beverages, hardly noticing we were in the room at all.

Nikki and Jackson radiate light. Their home is filled with laughter and love. The genuine gestures and beautiful embraces wrap around you as you watch them. It makes you smile and yearn for more.

This home would not be complete without a four-legged companion–or three! A family of 5 includes the adorable, Maggie, Duke, and Bully. Bully is quite the charmer, with his facial antics and cuddling capabilities. He took complete advantage of the empty chair and curled up next to the fireplace.

L to R: Bully, Maggie & Duke

Meet me under the mistletoe,
Midnight Christmas Eve
Your sweet kiss is the first gift
I’d like to receive.

Snuggles under the blanket, to keep us warm outside. This unpredictable weather may even bring a surprise! Look up! Look up! And there, right there; snowflakes travel down to grace the excited flesh of those all around.

Inside we went to get out of the cold. Pajamas and a movie in bed never sounded so fun. And it wasn’t just the two-legged beings, but the entire family up on the bed to enjoy this remarkable Saturday.

Thank you Nikki and Jackson for opening up your home to us and so graciously allowing us to capture your family during one of the best holidays of the year. We had so much fun entertaining the pups and playing in the “snow!” Looking through the images you would never know that it was actually 80+ degrees outside. 😀 Enjoy these memories.

Love, Ashley & Jacqueline

Oh how time does seem to zip right past us. It has been about a year and a half since we last saw this beautiful family. Little Colin was only crawling at that time. Fast forward — and boy has he grown! He was just as sweet as the day we first met him, a little shy but he quickly emerged from his shell. And not only has he turned into a handsome young man, but there is a little “Miss C” on the way to join this lovely family.

Although the season of fall was upon us, the temperature was still quite warm and the trees still exuded their lush green boughs. We first gathered underneath the enormous Banyan tree that shaded a small meadow which harbored many a picnic at the park. Colin was a bit timid and was not entirely sure who we were or what Mom and Dad had signed him up for. A few swings in the air and a shoulder ride from Pops lightened the mood and put him in a decidedly cheerful frame of mind. He started talking and walking around, politely asking if he could play on the swing set…such a gentleman.

Big Brother! YES!

The family brought these oh-so-tiny embellishments that they planned to adorn little Chloe with. Her tiny shoes with the protective father and big brother in the background simply melts my heart.

My dearest little sister, whom I adore…
God blessed me with you, forevermore.

Side by side, we will always be…
Through tears and heartache, I will never leave.

Through life’s trials we will work them out together…
What I am trying to say is I will love you forever.

We simply love our dads! Dads are the ones we wrestle with, tumble with, play with, run around and fall with. They inspire us to grow big and strong and in rare quiet moments, they teach us about right and wrong.

Miss Katie, you are glowing; such a gorgeous mommy-to-be. The colors and the wind played their parts beautifully that day.

Thank you so much for allowing us to capture this special time in your lives. We love watching you go from a family of 3 to a family of 4. These sweet memories will stay close to our hearts, but we absolutely cannot wait to meet Miss Chloe. Countdown til summer 2014…!

neverland of sleep.

It is rare to be greeted by a client whom hardly senses you near; one so enveloped by an idyllic slumber that their lashes hardly twitch as a cuff unbounds their wrist. Even detaching a cap and pilfering a binky proved no more meddling for her than the four crafty teenagers who ride around in the Mystery Machine. Try as I must to stimulate, tranquil and laid-back Madison Quinn was the type of client which newborn photographers dream of, one who scarcely stirred without so much as a murmur.

Like us, infants shift through the same cycles of sleep yet unlike us they expend a whopping 50% of their slumber in REM sleep; with premature babies that progressively increases to about 80%. Yet observing the peaceful uncontrolled twitches of muscles in limbs discovering stretches or witnessing lonesome suckling lips which have long since seized to feed, always leave you in wonder. For surely that newly developing, pint-sized mind is in a realm where adventures are not far between and created only in the cognizance of one so innocent and captivating.

For surely you must believe, as confidently as I, that there’s a soothing place which triggered Madison’s chest to rise and fall with each substantial gulp. That it too heightened her state of alertness so that she sporadically released a hefty sigh; this hypnotizing place was nothing less than the neverland of sleep. Now lolling here at a tender five days old, this sweetheart became seasoned in an impeccable taste of folk artists which only drew her in, deeper.

I’d imagined this feline reverie began much like the exercise of counting sheep. The rhythmic capering of silly kittens in every shade of the rainbow could certainly be fancied as the motivation behind her omniscient smile. Here they would tumble into a wooly field of blue as wee Madison outstretched her tiny creased fingers to entice a terrific snuggle-fest while she yielded into their velvety furs.

Still could it be that her heart was further charmed when galloping bareback on a handsome steed? Adventure is unhindered when the weightiest obstacle in her trail was merely the billowing wind over her newborn pixie cut. Because somewhere in every little girl’s genetic makeup there is a predisposition to perceive allure in any and all majestic creatures.

Be it the inquisitive owl cap which ultimately, formally introduced beautiful Madison Quinn to me. Even succumbed to a slight touch of the cold she was ever still an unruffled dream with gentle, skimming blue-grey peepers.

I must digress though, that however reasonably convincing she had been it’s a known fact that babies are dreamless for a handful of their first years in life. Nevertheless, my idealistic convictions propel me in appreciating the illustrious interpretations behind every photograph. Especially those eluding into the blissful and magical slumberland.

I absolutely loved getting to capture you Miss Madison and hope that we get more opportunities to watch you grow and blossom. Thank you Mom for being so receptive and entrusting me with your little angel!!

It seems little girls tend to dominate our blog posts as of late, but today we are thrilled to share the play date we had with two handsome brothers, Jake & Luke. Boys interact with you much differently than girls! The need to constantly be moving and doing seems to be built into their genes. Mom and Dad were quite the amazing duo as they seemed to have a magical ability for entertaining the kids while focusing on the cameras.

We met in downtown Baldwin Park where we walked the neighborhood exploring different spots. Jake was running this way and that, asking questions and naming the color of cars as they went by. Luke happily sat on his mother’s hip watching his older brother scurry about.

What are little boys made of?
Frogs and snails and puppy-dogs’ tails,
That’s what little boys are made of.

These two didn’t even know what the other was doing, they both just thought their mom and dad needed to have a tiny hand exploring their face. So inquisitive these brothers!

Gorgeous Family Photograph!

This was such a fun moment to capture. Jake went into such a giggle fit as his dad held him upside down. His laughter captivated the entire family sending genuine smiles to each of their faces.

Towards the end of our session, tired babes met with frustration, and as we pushed to get a final location we were met with defeat. Although this image makes me laugh every time! Little Brother starts to cry, followed by Big Brother. Little brother looks in puzzlement to his Big brother wondering what he’s crying about. Click goes the camera.

Thank you so much Showalters! We cannot tell you how much we enjoyed spending time with you all and getting to know the boys. We sincerely look forward to working with you again. If you would like to see even more images, Like us on Facebook and breeze through the album.

Kisses for Grandma.

A toddling little girl is a centre of common feeling which makes the most dissimilar people understand each other.    -George Eliot

After scrolling through these images I am sure you are curious to Miss Angelique’s age. She is 1 year old. So grown up already isn’t she! With all her expressions and willingness to explore the world, you would think she was on her way to college. 😉 Not once did this little one fuss while we rapidly changed her outfit. Not once did she cry in frustration when she did not understand why she was having to ‘sit here’ and ‘stand there.’ She was an absolute joy to photograph.

Thank you for playing with us for an afternoon. We could not help but fall in love with your precious face. We can’t wait for our next adventure and to see how much you have grown!

Little girls are the nicest things that can happen to people.
They are born with a bit of angel-shine about them, and though it wears thin sometimes,
there is always enough left to lasso your heart. | Alan Beck

This isn’t a novel revelation as it’s obvious that this particular bitsy girl has stolen our hearts and enchanted our cameras yet again. For there is art to be seen in her stare that immediately prompts our fingers to click without hesitation; Aubree just has that “angel-shine”. She is rambunctious and vivacious for a girl of three, ever spritely in delicate dresses yet resilient and tough towards unexpected tumbles.

In a year’s time I have been beckoned and initiated into this spunky little one’s magical world of frolicking and cheer. Aubree’s once demure very-two-year-old timidity was shed soon after our first photographic jaunt through the sunset drenched, tree-lined playground last spring. Her visage is now a comfortable home to an ever-present innocent smile while still featuring that incredible cerulean, precocious stare. Where there still I found a serene maturity which perpetually highlighted and framed her adorable little face.

This newly confidant toddler was content in front of the cameras, fluttering about with purpose and girlish charm. It was enough to take you by surprise if you weren’t aware of the rhythms and characteristics that each age group delivers. No longer driven by the urge to disobey, this little Aubree was a genuine delight still curiouser though quite assured while exclaiming approval of our many demands.

“Okay, Jacquie let’s play!”

Presently, with my partner along for the endearing ride, we joined this precious babe in a familiar land of make believe. Familiar of course for it’s one we’ve all been lost in some tens of years ago. To be in the inner circle of a fickle and complex three-year-old you must fluently speak their language by quite frankly ‘shedding‘ your lackluster adult-self along the way. Because “Simon” only says things if you willingly play along and no sooner will you find yourself a driver being shouted commands of changing traffic lights, “red light…green light”.

Ashley and I dove right in!

This ever recognizable place with sweet and candid Aubree also drove us to encounter the inner leap frog within us when she notably mentioned just how deep the sidewalk cracks would go. Alas, there was no way around it but to skip as she gleefully provoked us with play and we continued to capture her wonder.

As if games with Simon, wild stop and go antics and leaping frogs were not enough to “lasso your heart” surely the dainty girl who dipped with elation to clutch a multitude of tiny colored flowers would. She would pause if for a moment, sniff their perfume and skip away lightheartedly to her final cruise aboard a magical carousel.

Meandering through games of make-believe was draining. All too effortlessly to break from, though it was evident that to this darling little one playtime was exceptionally engrossing. Just then as captivation filled her eyes I immediately distinguished what set this one-year-wiser Aubree apart from her two-year-old self, it was the control in those eyes that easily delivered a variety of expressions more-so today.

We absolutely loved getting to play with you once again Miss Aubree and hope that this becomes a tradition as it’s a pleasure capturing your magnetism for your family and friends. Thank you Mom and Dad for being our first return clients!!
